Sunshine Coast Cozy Escape: Roberts Creek & Gibsons

Up the Creek Backpackers B&B

The lower Sunshine Coast's only hostel, a cedar house with free bikes and a dorm bed for the price of a Vancouver sandwich.

what it is

hostel / B&B (great for solo)

the damage

from ~$33/night (dorm)

from Vancouver

~40-min ferry from Horseshoe Bay + short drives

Up the Creek is a family-run cedar house standing among the kind of towering cedar and fir that make you feel briefly, pleasantly insignificant. It is the only hostel on the lower Sunshine Coast, which grants it a quiet monopoly on the backpacker's conscience. A dorm bed starts around thirty-odd dollars, which is roughly what a downtown Vancouver sandwich now costs you.

You can bunk in the seven-bed Arbutus dorm or take a private room: the Fir sleeps up to four, the Cedar up to five, and the Cherry Cabin out in the garden holds two people and not one more. There is a guest kitchen, a sun-deck strung with hammocks, a barbecue, board games, a book swap, and free loaner bikes for the properly ambitious.

The heart of Roberts Creek village is a ten-minute walk away, which the locals will tell you is more or less the entire point of Roberts Creek. Being the only hostel around, it draws a friendly, eco-minded crowd who will happily tell you where the good beach is, then generously come along with you.

The setting

1261 Roberts Creek Road, Roberts Creek, a ten-minute walk from the village center known as 'the Heart', and about 14 km up the coast from the Langdale ferry terminal.

Getting there

The ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale runs about 40 minutes; from Langdale it is roughly 14 km northwest to Roberts Creek. This is the rare Sunshine Coast stay where going car-free genuinely works: come as a foot passenger, catch local Sunshine Coast Transit from the terminal, and borrow one of the lodge's free bikes once you land. Parking is free if you do drive.

good to know

Just one dorm and three private rooms, so it is small and books out in summer; reserve early. Plan meals around the guest kitchen. Family-run and eco-minded, so expect quiet rather than a party hostel.
