Dream Weaver stands on the corner of Cowichan Bay Road and Botwood Lane and, in the words of the village's own business directory, towers over the bay, which for a bed and breakfast is a remarkably confident verb. From the dining room you look out over Cowichan Bay toward Salt Spring Island while somebody else makes you a baked apple pancake.

The suites are unashamedly romantic. The Magnolia and Primrose each come with a gas fireplace and a double jacuzzi tub, the Rosewood pairs its fireplace with two upholstered chairs, and guests mention coded door entry and separate entrances, which means you can slink back from dinner at whatever hour dinner became.

The quiet trump card is geography: the Masthead restaurant and the Cow Cafe sit directly across the street, so the whole evening happens on foot. It is a small, old fashioned operation with a small, old fashioned website, and TripAdvisor's 4.8 from 36 reviews suggests the formula needs no updating.

The setting

At 1682 Botwood Lane, on the corner of Cowichan Bay Road in the heart of Cowichan Bay village, directly opposite the Masthead restaurant and the Cow Cafe, with views over the bay to Salt Spring Island.

Getting there

Roughly 45 minutes from Victoria on Highway 1 over the Malahat, then down Cowichan Bay Road into the village; no ferry required. Parking at the property is down a short cobbled path, and village street parking is scarce, but once the car stops, everything worth doing is a five minute walk.

good to know

This is a phone and email operation (250-748-7688); the website is vintage and online listings are thin, so book direct and confirm current rates and rooms. Only three suites, and spring and summer weekends in the village fill quickly.

Why it works

  1. 1Double jacuzzi tubs and gas fireplaces in suites
  2. 2Bay and Salt Spring Island views at breakfast
  3. 3Masthead restaurant and Cow Cafe across the street
  4. 4Private coded entrances for late returns
