The building is nobody's idea of a boutique secret. It is a big, cheerful block of 56 suites, and every one of them faces the water, which in Cowichan Bay means a working marina, a tidal estuary, and the mountains doing their scenery thing beyond. You get a proper bedroom, a separate living and dining room, and in most suites a full kitchen you will use exactly once, for coffee.
Downstairs there is a heated pool, a sauna, a hot tub, and a fitness centre, which between them cover every known opinion about what a holiday is for. There is also boat moorage, in case you arrived by boat, which you did not. The on site restaurant is called the Cook and Butcher, and it looks over the bay, so nobody has to drive anywhere after the second glass.
The real point, though, is that Cowichan Bay village starts more or less at your door: one seaside street, much of it perched on pilings over the water, all of it walkable in slippers. Reviewers split between loving the view and grumbling about dated corners, which feels about right for a three star hotel with a five star window.
The setting
At 1681 Cowichan Bay Road, right on the waterfront at the edge of Cowichan Bay village, about 15 minutes south of Duncan, steps from the marina and the village's single seaside street.
Getting there
From Victoria it is roughly 45 minutes north on Highway 1 over the Malahat summit, then right onto Cowichan Bay Road; no ferry involved. Secure underground parking on site. Car-free sort of works via BC Transit's route 66 express toward Duncan, about 90 minutes, but budget a taxi for the final stretch into the Bay.
