Fairburn is a working 130 acre farm with a gabled 1896 farmhouse at its centre, and it is home to Canada's first water buffalo dairy. That last part is not decorative copy. The herd genuinely files past in the morning, and the mozzarella that turns up at breakfast came out of animals you can stroll over and thank personally.
The six guest rooms are heritage house rooms in the honest sense, which means charm by the yard and, in some cases, a bathroom across the hall, so couples who consider an ensuite non negotiable should read the room descriptions like a contract. Breakfast is the main event: farm eggs, fresh baking, and local sausage, served by hosts that guests describe with the warmth normally reserved for favourite relatives.
Beyond the veranda lie 130 acres of trails through pasture and forest, which is the entire evening entertainment program, and exactly enough of one. TripAdvisor holds the place at 4.9 from 47 reviews, a number most hotels would trade an entire wing for.
The setting
On Jackson Road in the quiet hills southwest of Duncan, about 15 minutes from the city's shops and Saturday farmers market, folded into the Cowichan Valley and surrounded by its own 130 acres.
Getting there
About 50 minutes from Victoria: Highway 1 north over the Malahat, then west off the highway near Duncan to 3310 Jackson Road. Free parking at the farm. There is no sensible car-free option; the Victoria to Duncan bus exists, but the farm sits well beyond it, so drive.
