More infoThe Gate of Harmonious Interest rises 12 metres over the top of Fisgard Street, freshly restored in March 2026 with lighting that turns it, at dusk, into a genuinely electric object. Canada's oldest Chinatown wraps around it in two short, lantern-strung blocks. Pat the stone lions donated by sister city Suzhou for luck, then drift toward Fan Tan Alley. Best after dark. The gate and the glow are free.
Time your arrival for dusk, because the freshly restored Gate of Harmonious Interest only earns its 12 metres of red-and-gold dragons once the new lighting kicks in. Pose under the gate, pat the hand-carved stone lions, then let the lantern-strung streets pull you past heritage facades to the mouth of Fan Tan Alley. Give it 45 unhurried minutes; a cheap bubble tea is an easy add-on, but the after-dark glow is the whole free show, and a fine springboard into dinner nearby.
