Rainy Day
Coquitlam's beloved Korean jjimjilbang: charcoal saunas, hot tubs, provided pyjamas, and hours of conversation on a heated floor.
JJ Family Spa is Metro Vancouver's go-to Korean jjimjilbang in Coquitlam, operating on the excellent premise that two people who sweat together talk more honestly. The drill: check in, put on the provided pyjamas, and start drifting between the earth, charcoal and salt rooms on the coed sauna floor. When you need a break, the gender-separated bathhouses have hot and cold tubs for the ambitious. Then back to a heated floor, lying down, talking about whatever comes up when there is nowhere to be. Entry is famously cheap, and if you want to upgrade the afternoon, book a body scrub while you're there. The decor is dated and does not pretend otherwise, which is either charming or irrelevant once you're warm and your eyes are half-closed. Come for the heat and the conversation. The afternoon will handle itself.
