Eritrean Plates and a Drink at Dahlak

Burnaby's licensed Eritrean room where you eat by hand, drink properly, and stay longer than you planned to.

Most Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurants make a choice early on: the food is the whole point, the room is incidental, the bar is nonexistent. Dahlak on Edmonds Street in Burnaby went the other way, and it turns out that was a good call. It's licensed, with a real bar, so you can pair a hand-eaten platter of zigni and tibsi with a cold beer or a proper cocktail and settle in for a long evening. The kitchen spans East African and Middle Eastern flavours: injera and savoury stews alongside grilled and spiced meats, giving you plenty of reasons to keep ordering. The room has an easy, gastropub-ish feel that makes it natural to stretch dinner into something longer. Rated 4.3 on Google. Order the combination platter, eat from one plate with your hands, and let the bar take it from there.
