The world-famous grounds light up with thousands of bulbs, the Twelve Days of Christmas played out in illuminated scenes hedge to hedge, carollers drifting between them. Best of all, an outdoor ice rink gives you an excellent excuse to grab someone's arm. Let the whole spectacle work on you.
Book a timed ticket online, it's hugely popular and entry is staggered. Parking is free and plentiful in the big Butchart lot, so just drive to 800 Benvenuto Ave (about 25 minutes from downtown Victoria). Start with the Twelve Days of Christmas displays and the Sunken Garden lookout (the best photo on the property), then lace up at the outdoor ice rink and do a few laps before warming up by the fire with a hot chocolate. Don't miss the carollers and the dancing-light reflections on the ponds. Want a shorter visit? The Sunken Garden loop plus the rink is a complete, magical hour on its own.
