Lights at Lafarge Opens With a Free Night on Nov. 27

By Date Spark team · Published

The cheapest good date of the holiday season might be in Coquitlam. Lights at Lafarge, which the City of Coquitlam produces and bills as Metro Vancouver's largest free outdoor winter lights display, opens on Friday, November 27 with an opening night celebration from 5pm to 8pm. Expect the light displays switched on around the lake, local food trucks and live entertainment, and no ticket to buy.

Where it is and how to get there

The lights are in Town Centre Park at 1299 Pinetree Way, around Lafarge Lake and its loop trail. The City says the park is reached by transit from Lafarge Lake-Douglas SkyTrain station, the end of the Millennium Line, and that it has ample free parking. On an opening night with food trucks and music, expect the lots to be busier than usual, so the SkyTrain is the easier choice.

The City's park page also points evening visitors to the fountain colours, and the reflections are the reason to walk the water side of the loop slowly.

What is not posted yet

As of November 5, the City's Lights at Lafarge page gives the opening night but not the season's closing date or nightly hours. It says to watch its website and social channels for updates through the season. If you are planning a weeknight visit later in December, check that page first rather than assuming the lights are on.

Who it suits

Opening night is a good low-stakes first date: it costs nothing to get in, there is food without a reservation, and a loop of a lake has a natural end point. It is also a festive evening for a couple on a budget who want the lights without the ticket prices of the bigger paid displays. If you would rather have the lights to yourselves, skip the crowd on the 27th and come back on a quiet night once the City posts its hours.

To keep the night going, Mariner Brewing on Lansdowne Drive is a short walk away for a pint, and Ong Ba Eatery on Pinetree Way does a bowl of pho that suits a cold evening.
