Goblin Plays Tenebre Live at the Rio on Friday
Most film dates leave the soundtrack to the speakers. On Friday, November 6, Claudio Simonetti's Goblin plays the score to Dario Argento's Tenebre live at the Rio Theatre on East Broadway while the film runs on the big screen. Doors are at 7:15pm and the show starts at 8pm. After the film and a short intermission, the band comes back for a second set of Goblin material and best-of themes, each played against the film it was written for.
Who is on stage
Simonetti wrote and recorded some of the best-known scores in horror, including Suspiria, Dawn of the Dead, Deep Red and Demons. Tenebre is Argento's 1982 thriller, and the Rio lists it at 101 minutes, so with the intermission and the second set, plan on a full evening rather than a quick screening.
The Rio rates the night 14A with a mild content warning, so minors are allowed in, and the bar serves 19+ with ID. The start time is marked as subject to change, and the theatre asks people to arrive on time.
Tickets, and what to know before you buy
On the Rio's ticket site, adult entry is $65 and the Artists Circle, the first two rows of the centre section, is $85, both plus a service charge. Every ticket is final sale with no refunds or exchanges, and Groupons and passes are not accepted for this one. If the show does not sell out, the leftover tickets go on sale at the box office before showtime, which usually opens 30 minutes ahead.
Our advice is to book online and get there 20 to 30 minutes early, as the Rio suggests. A drink at the bar before the lights go down is part of the fun, and a single screen with a live band in front of it rewards a good seat.
Making a date of it
This suits a couple where at least one of you owns a horror soundtrack on vinyl, or anyone who likes a date with built-in adrenaline and no pressure to fill silences. If one of you cannot sit through a horror film, this is not the night to find out. For a cheap, filling dinner first, Baby Dhal Roti Shop on Commercial Drive is a few minutes' walk from the Rio. Afterwards, walk up the Drive to Bar Corso for an amaro and a debrief on the best kill.
