Open Space has been Victoria's longest-running artist-run centre since 1972, and it's your best defence against a forgettable evening. Up a flight of stairs on Fort Street you'll find the work commercial galleries won't touch: conceptual installations, sound art, performance nights. Admission is free, so go in curious, argue on the way out about whether it was brilliant or baffling, then agree on a drink.
