Wen Wei Wang Dances His Last Solo Oct. 23 and 24

Here's a date that breaks the usual dinner-and-a-movie routine: Vancouver choreographer Wen Wei Wang performs Last Solo at The Dance Centre, 677 Davie Street, on October 23 and 24, 2026, at 8 PM. After more than three decades of making work, it's billed as his final solo, part of The Dance Centre's Global Dance Connections series.

What Last Solo is about

So what are you actually going to see? Wang began dancing in China, where the language of the hands, arms and upper body shaped his voice as an artist. The Dance Centre describes the piece as his reflection on memory, mortality and the connection between body, mind and the universe, made as he returns to the stage as a senior artist.

He isn't up there alone. Visual and sound artist Gary James Joynes performs live on modular synthesizer and vocals, with a live mix of analog video that turns sound into images, so the music and the visuals are made in the room with him.

Tickets, timing and the talkback

Tickets are $38, or $29 for under 30s, students and seniors, plus a $1 facility fee. The show runs 60 minutes, and Saturday's performance is followed by a post-show artist talkback. If you like hearing how a piece came together, Saturday is your night.

Is Last Solo a good date?

If you've never been to a contemporary dance show together, this is a good one to start with. It's an hour long, it's personal, and you'll walk out with something real to talk about (which beats rating the appetizers again). It's two nights only, so book soon and plan a late dinner nearby.
