Lumiere Light Festival Returns Downtown Nov. 12 to 14

Free, outdoors and glowing after dark is a hard date to say no to. Lumiere, the festival of light-based public art, returns to downtown Vancouver, the West End and Gastown from Thursday, November 12 to Saturday, November 14, 2026, from 5:00 to 9:30 pm each evening. It's the festival's 13th year, and its organizers say this one nearly didn't happen.

Illuminated art and live performances, no ticket needed

The program pairs small and large illuminated artworks and light-based projections with live performances, spread across five public plazas. Admission is free, and the organizers say Lumiere remains free for everyone to enjoy.

It runs three evenings only, Thursday through Saturday, so it's worth picking your night now rather than waiting for a later weekend that won't come.

A smaller festival after a tough funding year

The organizers are upfront about it: Lumiere almost didn't happen in 2026. Like many arts and cultural organizations, they say they faced a very challenging fundraising year, and they chose to go ahead with a smaller festival rather than skip the year. They're also asking for help to bring the three evenings to life, so if you've wanted to pitch in on a public arts event in Vancouver, the festival's website is the place to start.

Five plazas in downtown, the West End and Gastown

Downtown, the festival is at the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza and 800 Robson Plaza. The festival also lists Jim Deva Plaza at 1200 Bute Street, 1800 Davie Plaza at 1800 Davie Street and Blood Alley Square at 38 Blood Alley Square, with the West End and Gastown as the other two neighbourhoods on the program. Check the festival's website for artist and performance details before you head out.

This one suits two people who would rather walk and talk than sit across a menu. If it were us, we'd pick one neighbourhood and take our time there, then save the rest for another evening. One cluster of plazas is a date. All five is a step count.
