The Polygon Gallery Throws an 80s Halloween Party

By Date Spark team · Published

Most galleries ask you to keep your voice down. On Saturday, October 31, The Polygon Gallery is asking you to wear a leotard. Halloween at The Polygon Gallery runs from 8pm to 1am at 101 Carrie Cates Court in North Vancouver, with an 80s aerobics theme, live acts and DJs spread through the building, and general tickets from $50 plus fees, according to the gallery's event page.

What your $50 actually buys

This is a party that happens to have good architecture, not an exhibition with a punch bowl. The gallery lists DJs and performers on two floors, a beauty bar, a free-play arcade, a lounge and multiple bars. There's no formal workout, the page promises, though there will be dancing, which feels like the same thing with better lighting. The best costume wins $500 cash, and group costumes get prizes too.

VIP tickets start at $100 plus fees and add a line bypass, a welcome cocktail, the VIP lounge and bar, and free coat check. For a couple, that's an extra $100 for two to skip a queue and a coat line in late October. We'd only pay it if you're arriving at peak time and one of you has strong opinions about standing outside in spandex.

Who this date is for

This suits couples who want Halloween to feel like a night out rather than a fright. Nothing here is designed to make you scream, apart from the arcade, and the arcade is free. It's 19+ with ID checked at the door, which keeps the energy firmly adult. If one of you lives for jump scares, look elsewhere; if you both like costumes, cocktails and an excuse to dance badly with commitment, this is our pick for the North Shore on Halloween.

A few rules worth reading before you get dressed: no culturally insensitive costumes, which means denied entry, and no prop weapons unless they're clearly fake. Payment is cashless, coat and bag check costs extra, and large bags aren't allowed, so travel light. Tickets are final sale but can be passed to a friend if plans change.

How we'd do it

Take the SeaBus. The gallery is about 700 metres east of the Lonsdale Quay terminal, and arriving by water in matching sweatbands is half the fun. The event page lists bars but no food, so eat on Lonsdale first and walk over for a little after 8pm, before the coat line builds. If the night runs to the 1am close, check the last SeaBus sailing before you leave the house so nobody ends up paying surge pricing in a headband.
