Four dead-flat kilometres pointing into the Salish Sea, Mount Baker on the horizon, and herons at eye level the whole way.
The Iona Jetty is four kilometres of dead-flat sand and grass pointing straight out into the Salish Sea off Richmond, and it's one of those places that feels slightly cinematic for reasons you can't quite explain. The open strait runs along one side, the Fraser slides past on the other, planes lift off from YVR, and one of BC's best birding spots quietly sends herons and raptors past at eye level. Take the upper paved path for the bigger views or the lower gravel one if you've brought a dog. On a clear day Mount Baker, the Coast Mountains, and Vancouver Island all line up at the far end like they arranged it on purpose. Bring a windbreaker, pick the golden-hour slot when the whole jetty turns gold, and let the city fall away behind you.
