The Fair at the PNE is the city's great end-of-summer ritual, and as a date it writes itself: share a bag of mini donuts on the way to the wooden coaster, argue over ring-toss strategy, catch the SuperDogs because you are only human, and finish with the Summer Night Concert that comes free with admission. Gates open at 11am and the grounds run well into the evening, so an afternoon ticket quietly becomes a whole day. Adults ride for about thirty dollars at the gate, less online, with ride passes extra.

On Sundays through the summer, Gastown closes Water Street to cars and hands it back to people: live music, sidewalk pop-ups, and the neighbourhood's patios spilling into the street, all along the cobblestones between the steam clock and the old brick warehouses. It is a free, plan-free date, wander hand in hand, follow the music, and pick a patio to land on. The prettiest, most photogenic stretch of the city with no traffic to dodge.

That Green Ideal is the biggest Emily Carr exhibition in more than two decades, a full-floor survey of the painter who turned British Columbia's forests and shorelines into something restless and alive. It is a slow, soulful wander for two, with plenty to linger over and talk about, and it stays open rain or shine in the heart of downtown. On view through November 8, 2026; gallery admission applies, and the first Friday evening of each month is free.

The Richmond Night Market is the shared-skewer date perfected: more than a hundred food stalls run from rotato spirals to tanghulu to grilled squid, and the whole point is ordering small and often, trading bites as you go. Between courses there are carnival games, a lot of neon, and the particular joy of a crowd that is entirely there for dinner. It runs Friday and Saturday nights to midnight and Sundays to eleven, right beside Bridgeport SkyTrain, so nobody has to be the driver. Entry is under ten dollars; bring cash-app patience for the popular stalls.

Bard on the Beach is the date where the backdrop does most of the work. You sit under an open-sided tent in Vanier Park from June through mid-September while the play runs and, behind the stage, the real mountains, water and skyline perform their sunset routine. Book a later show to catch it. On an August Friday, Bard After Dark adds a late cabaret if you have the energy.
