For decades Sooke Harbour House was the place on Vancouver Island, the white inn at the end of Whiffin Spit Road where food writers came to eat things picked from the garden that morning. Then it closed, sat through four and a half years of renovation worth C$14 million, and reopened in summer 2025 looking suspiciously well rested.
All 28 rooms face the ocean, and the details vary room by room: wood-burning fireplaces, soaker tubs, Jacuzzis, and steam showers that in some rooms are indoors and in others sit out on the balcony, presumably for guests who like their steam with a side of weather. Whiffen Spit, the best flat walk in Sooke, starts at the beach below.
Food remains the point. There is the restaurant, a Garden Cafe, and a Wine Cellar, and stays of two nights or more currently include a $75 dining credit, which the kitchen will help you dispose of without visible strain. New owners took over in May 2026, so the paint here is fresh in every sense.
The setting
At the end of Whiffin Spit Road on the Sooke waterfront, where Sooke Harbour meets the Juan de Fuca Strait, with the Whiffen Spit walking path directly below and Sooke's town centre about five minutes away by car.
Getting there
From Victoria, take Highway 1 to Highway 14 into Sooke, then Whiffin Spit Road down to the water; about 40 km and 45 to 55 minutes. No ferries. BC Transit's route 61 reaches Sooke from downtown Victoria, but the hotel sits well beyond the stops, so bring the car.
