Point No Point has been renting cabins on this bluff since 1952, named for a headland that appears and disappears depending on where you happen to be standing, which tells you everything about the local attitude toward precision. Below, the Juan de Fuca Strait carries on toward the Olympic Mountains, entirely unbothered by your schedule.

The 25 cabins run from original log builds to modern cottages, and nearly all come with a private hot tub, a fireplace or wood stove, a full kitchen, and an ocean view. What they do not come with is a television, an arrangement that has yet to produce a single complaint from anyone sitting in a hot tub at midnight.

The on-site restaurant serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday, reservations from 5pm, which matters because the nearest alternative involves getting back in the car. Booking is charmingly old-fashioned: your deposit is the last night's rate, and holiday stays are paid in full a month out, non-refundable, so commit like you mean it.

The setting

In Shirley on West Coast Road (Highway 14), about 20 minutes past Sooke on Vancouver Island's southwest coast, on a bluff above the Juan de Fuca Strait with private beach access below the cabins.

Getting there

Drive from Victoria via Highway 1 then Highway 14 through Sooke, roughly 70 km and 75 to 90 minutes on a winding coastal road. No ferries involved. You park at your cabin. Car-free does not realistically work; regional buses fade out around Sooke, well short of Shirley.

Two-night minimum, three over holidays. Deposit equals your last night's rate; holiday and four-plus-night stays are charged in full one month ahead, non-refundable, with a $25 fee on any refund. Pets $15/night in select cabins with a $100 damage deposit. Check-in 4:30pm sharp, no early arrivals. Restaurant is dinner only, Wednesday to Sunday.
