Science World After Dark: Halloween in Vancouver
Science World's adults-only After Dark series has a Halloween edition on October 30. Sinister Science runs from 6pm to 10pm for guests aged 19 and older, with live entertainment, forensic entomology and hands-on science showcases. Tickets are listed at $44.99. If your usual date-night conversation has become a forensic examination of where to eat, here is a different subject to investigate.
What's actually happening
The dome transforms into a haunted venue from 6pm to 10pm on October 30 with three main draws. Centre Stage hosts Drag King Vincent Rice introducing Neil E. Dee, a stunt performer whose two-decade career includes sword swallowing, laying on machetes while bricks break overhead, and acting as a human dartboard. In the Science Theatre, PhD candidate Jeffrey Yung delivers a talk on forensic entomology: the science of using insects to determine time of death, detect poisons, and identify whether remains were moved. The Sinister Science Showcase features hands-on activities from the SFU Centre for Forensic Research, Vancouver Police Museum, and SFU Psychology.
Wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks are available for purchase, along with food from Triple O's and the Snack Lab. The Science Store stays open if you want to take home a souvenir. All sales are final; no refunds, resales, or combining with other offers. You'll need government ID to enter; no ID means no entry, and security checks are part of the process.
Make a night of it
This works best if you actually want to learn something while being mildly unsettled. If you're the type who watches true crime documentaries and asks questions, the forensic entomology talk will scratch that itch. The sword swallower and stunt performer add spectacle without requiring you to pretend you're having fun; you either are or you're not, and that's fine. If you're planning this as a date, know that 'we'll learn about insect forensics together' is either a green flag or a dealbreaker, and you'll find out fast.
