Wild Renfrew holds the best real estate in the village, a string of cottages along the boardwalk above the wharf, running from studios for two up to beachfront two bedroom units that sleep six. Inside it is all plush log cabin comfort, a phrase the owners use themselves and, unusually for the hospitality industry, appear to actually mean.
Several units come with a private hot tub or an outdoor soaker tub on the deck, positioned so you can sit in hot water and watch cold water crash below you, which is the entire point of the west coast. Most cottages take dogs, there is a two night minimum, and the Renfrew Pub is 100 metres away, close enough to smell the chowder.
Botanical Beach and its tide pools sit 2.8 kilometres down the road, a ten minute drive or a fine walk in proper boots, which in Port Renfrew you should assume you will need anyway. Booking.com guests score it 9.2 out of 10, which for a village at the end of a winding highway is practically a standing ovation.
The setting
On the Port Renfrew waterfront boardwalk beside the wharf, 100 metres from the Renfrew Pub, an easy stroll from Coastal Kitchen Cafe, and 2.8 km from Botanical Beach Provincial Park.
Getting there
Drive Highway 14 west from Victoria through Sooke and Jordan River, roughly 107 km and two hours of increasingly winding coastal road, with no ferry involved. Parking in the village is easy. Car-free genuinely works in season: the West Coast Trail Express bus runs Victoria to Port Renfrew daily May through September, about $72 one way.
