A family-run motel since 1960 where the honeymoon suite has a jacuzzi, a fireplace, and zero pretensions.

what it is

tidy independent motel

The 4 Pines has been putting up Lillooet travellers since 1960, which in motel years makes it practically a heritage institution. It is a proper family-owned operation spread over three buildings and forty air-conditioned rooms in downtown Lillooet, with parking directly in front of your door, that great vanishing luxury of the road trip. You carry your bag approximately four steps. Civilization peaked here and nobody noticed.

Rooms run from budget doubles to two bedroom suites with kitchenettes, all on Serta pillow top mattresses in a town so quiet that guests keep writing reviews about how well they slept. The surprise is the honeymoon suites, which come with a jacuzzi tub, a private balcony, and a fireplace, at prices that would barely cover parking in Vancouver. Romance, it turns out, is cheaper above the Fraser.

You are steps from the Lillooet Museum and Visitor Centre and about a ten minute walk from Miyazaki House, the town's restored 1890s heritage home. There is laundry on site and free coffee and tea in the lobby, which is exactly the amenity list you want after four hours on the Duffey. Nothing here is fancy. Everything here works.

The setting

At 108 8th Avenue in downtown Lillooet, steps from the Lillooet Museum and Visitor Centre and a ten minute walk from Miyazaki House; Seton Lake is a short drive west on Highway 99.

Getting there

From Vancouver take Highway 99 through Whistler and Pemberton, then the Duffey Lake Road into Lillooet: about 4 to 4.5 hours, no ferries involved. Free parking right outside your room. Winter tires are mandatory October to April, and the Fraser Canyon route via Hope is the longer bad weather backup. You need a car.
