Cumberland Solo Reset: Mountain-Bike Village in the Comox Valley

The Wellington Bed & Breakfast

The one that got away: our honest report on a B&B we could not pin down.

Every shortlist has one entry that behaves like a rare bird: reported, plausible, never photographed. The Wellington Bed & Breakfast is ours. We searched the booking platforms, the Comox Valley tourism directories, and the Cumberland lodging listings, and found no property currently trading under this name. In a village of Cumberland's size, that may simply mean it books by word of mouth, or it may mean it has quietly flown.

What Cumberland verifiably offers instead is a small and very good bed and breakfast scene of the miners' cottage variety. The Cumberland Guesthouse at 3284 Second Street runs self contained suites with full kitchens, in suite laundry, and a bike wash station steps from Dunsmuir Avenue, and the heritage King George Hotel holds a five star average on TripAdvisor, admittedly from three reviewers.

If your heart is set on a proper old house, Airbnb carries a handful of restored heritage homes in the village, including an 1889 build redone with rammed earth walls a two minute walk from the shops. Book whichever one answers its email; in Cumberland that is the true mark of an operating business.

The setting

Cumberland village, nominally. We could not confirm a current address for this property. Cumberland's small stays cluster within a few blocks of Dunsmuir Avenue, the fully walkable main street.

Getting there

Ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (1 hour 40 minutes crossing), then about 75 minutes north on Highway 19 to the Cumberland exit; plan on 4.5 hours from Vancouver with ferry queues. Reserve the ferry in summer. Whichever Cumberland stay you land, the village itself needs no car once you arrive.

good to know

We could not verify this B&B is currently operating; as of mid 2026 no listing appears on booking platforms, TripAdvisor, or Comox Valley tourism directories. Confirm directly before building a weekend around it, and hold the Cumberland Guesthouse (4.9 on TripAdvisor, 153 reviews) as the backup.

Why it works

  1. 1An honest appraisal of Cumberland's tiny B&B scene
  2. 2Verified fallback stays named and rated
  3. 3Heritage cottage rentals minutes from the trails
