Bowen Island cottage & cabin rentals
The island's freelance cottages: hand-built timber cabins, sunset-side beach houses, and a wood stove in nearly everything.
what it is
self-contained cabins (range of budgets)
the damage
from ~C$120/night, averaging ~C$190-260
from Vancouver
~20-min ferry from Horseshoe Bay
Beyond the two named institutions, Bowen keeps a rotating cast of privately rented cottages and cabins on Airbnb and Vrbo, roughly in the C$120 to C$260 a night range for the normal ones, climbing steeply for anything with the word oceanfront attached. This is an island of about 3,800 people that has clearly decided its main export is other people's weekends.
The rentals cluster in two camps. Around Snug Cove and Deep Bay you get walk-from-the-ferry convenience; out west near Tunstall Bay you get the sunset side, with listings like a 1,400 square foot modern house on 3.5 forested acres facing the evening light, about 15 minutes' drive from the dock. The Wildwood Cabins set the local tone: hand crafted post and beam, built from local and reclaimed timber, clad in charred cedar. Somebody burned the siding on purpose, and it looks terrific.
Choosing is the whole sport. Filter for a wood stove, check the distance to Snug Cove, and read the listing map closely, because a Bowen kilometre involves more hill than you think. Book the west side for sunsets, the cove for dinner on foot, and either way pack less than you plan to.
The setting
Scattered across Bowen Island, with clusters around walkable Snug Cove and Deep Bay near the ferry, and along the sunset-facing west side near Tunstall Bay, about 15 minutes' drive from the dock.
Getting there
Drive 25 to 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay, then the 20 minute unreservable ferry to Snug Cove. For rentals beyond the cove, bring the car; the vehicle queue backs up on summer weekends, so arrive early. Car-free only really works for places within walking distance of Snug Cove.
