Broke & Bougie
Pale sand, shallow water, Mount Baker across the strait, and a volunteer-run 1950s soft-serve hut nearby for when you've earned it.
Willows Beach, Oak Bay
More infoWillows Beach is Oak Bay quietly being better than it lets on, a crescent of soft, pale sand with shallow, swimmable water and Mount Baker looking implausibly scenic across the strait. Roll out a blanket, wade in, comb for shells, and dry off on a log as the ferries slide past. When you've earned a treat, the volunteer-run Kiwanis tea room nearby does 1950s soft-serve for a couple of loonies.
Small, manageable, and exactly the right size for an afternoon rather than an expedition. Beach, lawn, play area and washrooms cover the essentials, though any food stand nearby may be seasonal, so bring snacks as backup. Keep an eye on the waterline while you actually talk to each other.
