Shakespeare under canvas in Vanier Park, with the mountains and the sea doing their golden-hour thing right behind the actors.
Bard on the Beach is the date where the backdrop does so much of the work you almost feel bad for it. You sit under a big open-sided tent in Vanier Park from roughly June through mid-September, the play is going, and right behind the stage the actual mountains, water, and downtown skyline are performing their sunset routine like the whole city rehearsed. The lineup rotates through Shakespeare and clever adaptations, and it has been a Vancouver institution long enough to have done this many, many times and still get it right. Bring a layer because the sea breeze arrives at intermission with genuine commitment. Book a slightly later show to catch the sunset behind the stage. Picnic on the grass beforehand. Friday night in August means Bard After Dark adds a late cabaret, if you have the energy.
