For the Labour Day long weekend the Maritime Museum of BC turns the public docks along Wharf and Government Streets into a floating museum: close to a hundred classic wooden boats, from tiny varnished dinghies to full schooners, tied up gunwale to gunwale for anyone to walk past and admire. Owners are usually on deck happy to talk about the restoration, there is a sail race out on the harbour to cheer for, and the whole thing costs nothing beyond a suggested five dollar donation at the gate. It is an easy, unhurried stroll with the Parliament Buildings and the Empress across the water as a backdrop, best done slowly with a coffee in hand.

The Victoria Fringe, run by Intrepid Theatre, turns downtown venues around Market Square and the Alix Goolden Hall into a warren of uncurated one-hour shows each late summer. Comedy, storytelling, dance, and the delightfully odd, all a short walk apart in the prettiest part of the city. The 2026 festival, its 40th, runs August 26 to September 6. Shows are inexpensive, so the move is to see a couple and let the misses become the good stories.

The Royal BC Museum's 2026 feature exhibition is a genuinely transporting one: dim, scented, atmospheric galleries recreating the ancient Egyptian afterlife around 250 real artifacts, coffins and pieces of jewellery. It is immersive enough to spark hours of conversation and worth building a Victoria day trip around. On view through January 3, 2027; timed entry is recommended and the exhibition is included with museum admission.

Victoria's Greek community has run this festival for 25 years, and it works exactly the way it should: lamb turning on the spit outside, trays of souvlaki, spanakopita and baklava moving fast, and dance groups from across North America performing between sets of live Greek music. It happens at the Greek Community Hellenic Centre on Elk Lake Drive, next to Saanich Commonwealth Place, over two weekends, August 28 to 30 and September 4 to 7. Admission is free. Come hungry and do not skip the loukoumades, fried to order and soaked in honey.
