Free rotating art galleries in a century-old French-Canadian mansion in Maillardville, with a heritage square and museum out back.
Ryan House is a turn-of-the-century mansion with French-Canadian mansard rooflines in historic Maillardville, which is the most history-soaked corner of Coquitlam and BC's biggest French-Canadian neighbourhood. Place des Arts operates out of it as a non-profit arts centre, which means free rotating galleries of local and emerging artists, and the kind of wander where you can actually talk because nobody is shushing you. Head next door to Carre Heritage Square and the afternoon becomes a small history lesson: Mackin House Museum, the old Fraser Mills rail station, and an outdoor amphitheatre all in one square, all free. It is a low-key, no-pressure date that manages to feel more thoughtful than it costs. Come curious, leave with something to talk about, and spend exactly nothing doing it.
