Hear Chinatown's Stories Up Close

The Chinese-Canadian story told through personal voices, photographs, and an animated dining table, inside a heritage bank on Pender.

The Chinatown Storytelling Centre occupies a handsome old Bank of Montreal building on East Pender, which tells you something about the neighbourhood's history right there, before you've even walked in. Inside, it tells the Chinese-Canadian story through personal voices, photographs, an animated dining table that is stranger and more moving than it sounds, and interactive kiosks that pull you in further than you expect. Give it an unhurried hour and you will walk out knowing things about a neighbourhood you've probably wandered through a hundred times, possibly a little quieter for it. The correct follow-up is to head straight into Chinatown for dumplings or tea while the conversation is still going. Open Thursday to Monday, so it pairs well with a long weekend afternoon when you have nowhere to be.
