VLACC's Latin Vinyl and Dance Night Hits Granville Island

By Date Spark · Published

VLACC's Latin Expressions festival turns Performance Works on Granville Island into a three-part Latin American dance floor on Saturday, October 10, 2026, with vinyl DJs, a cumbia class and a live band under the title I Like It Like That!

Three Different Nights in One Room

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show runs 7 to 11 p.m. It starts with Metiendo Mano, a vinyl listening session from Trópico Norte, with selectors Ana Rivera (Mexico), Diana Puentes (Colombia) and Tom Howard (Canada) playing records from across Latin America and the Caribbean. Then Salseo, a queer Latinx-led collective built around Afro-Latinx social dancing, teaches a cumbia class open to all levels, no partner or prior dance experience required. Midnight Boogaloo closes the live portion, led by Colombian guitarist Alan Ruiz, playing cumbia, salsa, boogaloo and Latin jazz drawn from 1960s and '70s New York. After the band, Trópico Norte's selectors go back to the decks.

It is, structurally, a set-up where you get taught the steps by people who actually want you dancing, then watch a band that has clearly done its homework on the genre, then get a do-over on vinyl once the lights and your nerve have both come back down.

Where and Why It's Happening

The event is at Performance Works, 1218 Cartwright Street on Granville Island, and is presented as part of VLACC's Latin Expressions 2026, a multidisciplinary festival running throughout October to mark Canada's Latin American Heritage Month. Colombian Antojitos will be selling food through the night, so it can double as dinner if you don't mind eating between dance lessons.

Worth Trying If Neither of You Can Dance

The cumbia class is explicitly open to beginners, which makes it a decent low-stakes outing for two people who are equally unqualified to be there. Check VLACC's event page for ticket pricing and availability before you go.
