The Old House is the civilized option: 79 suites split between two West Coast style buildings, Maple and Cedar, beside the Courtenay River estuary and roughly fifteen minutes by car from Cumberland's trailheads. Every suite comes with a fireplace and a kitchenette, which after a full day on the mountain feels less like an amenity and more like a rescue.
On site there is a full service spa called OhSpa, an outdoor heated pool, a hot tub, and a gym for anyone with unspent energy, a demographic we have never personally met at this address. The spa menu runs to hydrotherapy and body wraps, and the hot tub runs to exactly the temperature your quadriceps were praying for.
Locals Restaurant operates on the property, a farm to table institution whose founding chef retired in 2023 and handed the kitchen to four Comox Valley industry veterans rather than let it leave town. Downtown Courtenay's shops sit a few blocks away, and rates start around C$195 a night, which buys a remarkable amount of fireplace.
The setting
At 1730 Riverside Lane in Courtenay, beside the Courtenay River estuary, a few blocks from downtown Courtenay's shops and restaurants and about a 15 minute drive from Cumberland village and its trail network.
Getting there
Same ferry math as Cumberland: Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay (1 hour 40 minutes crossing), then about 70 minutes up Highway 19 into Courtenay; around 4.5 hours total from Vancouver. Free self parking on site. Reserve the ferry for Friday evenings and summer weekends unless you enjoy terminal cuisine.
